ERC5923 is an oil thermostat assembly. Fitted into the oil filter housing, the thermostat regulates oil temperature on 4-cylinder engines up to and including the 300Tdi and on 3.5L Twin Carb V8 engines, helping the oil reach and maintain correct operating temperature during warm-up and normal running. Inspect the unit when carrying out oil system or filter work and replace if it is sticking, leaking or otherwise fails to regulate oil temperature.
