ERC8861 is a timing belt tensioner fitted to the timing drive of the 2.5L 4-cylinder pre-Tdi diesel engines used in the Defender. The tensioner applies controlled tension to the timing belt to keep correct engagement between the belt and pulleys, reducing slack, limiting belt vibration and compensating for belt stretch caused by wear and temperature changes.
