ERR1157 is an inlet valve for the 200Tdi cylinder head. Fitted to 200Tdi engines in Defender, Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic models, the valve opens on the intake stroke to admit the intake charge into the combustion chamber and seals against the valve seat during compression and combustion. It works with valve guides, springs and retainers to maintain a reliable seal; damage to the seating face, worn stems or collapsed springs will reduce compression and cause poor running and increased soot. Valves are normally inspected and replaced during cylinder head service or rebuild, and correct seating and stem-to-guide clearance are set during head assembly rather than by swapping the valve alone.
