ERR1642 is a crankshaft timing sprocket fitted to the timing drive of 200Tdi engines. It engages the timing chain with the crankshaft and, as the primary drive gear, transmits crankshaft rotation into the timing chain so the camshafts and injection pump operate in the correct phase relationship to piston position. Accurate engagement of the sprocket teeth is necessary for valve timing and injection timing. Over time the sprocket teeth and chain can wear or develop play; such wear changes the effective timing relationship and requires replacement of worn components to restore correct timing geometry. When replacing the sprocket, inspect the timing chain and related tensioning components for wear or damage and renew items as required to prevent premature wear of the new sprocket.
