The housing carries the wax-element thermostat that regulates coolant flow according to engine temperature: it remains closed while the engine is cold to allow rapid warm-up and opens at its rated temperature to route coolant to the radiator. The housing also provides the mechanical interface to the cylinder head and contains ports for the radiator and heater hoses, ensuring the thermostat is correctly located within the vehicle's coolant circuit.
