ETC5190 is a timing chain tensioner for 2.25 and 2.5 litre petrol 4-cylinder engines. Fitted to the timing chain system of Series and Defender models, this mechanical unit acts as the chain take-up mechanism: the self-contained cylinder applies force to the timing chain guide or rail to remove slack, keeping the chain engaged with the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets as the chain wears and as thermal expansion alters running clearances. Correct chain take-up preserves valve timing relationships and reduces noise from chain rattle; where an original tensioner has lost travel or damping, replacement with ETC5190 restores correct chain take-up and running behaviour.
