Land Rover Part Number: LHS000040 - Crankshaft Sprocket
LHS000040 is a crankshaft sprocket that forms the lower timing gear on the M62 B44 4.4 V8 petrol engine fitted to the Range Rover L322. Fitted to the front of the crankshaft, the sprocket's toothed profile engages the timing chain and transmits crankshaft rotation to the camshaft sprockets to preserve valve timing and combustion phasing. Correct mesh between the sprocket and chain is critical; worn or damaged teeth, an out-of-round hub or excessive wear can allow chain slack, create noise at the timing cover and alter camshaft timing. Where the sprocket forms part of the lower timing gear assembly, replacement is normally carried out alongside the timing chain and tensioning components to restore correct timing geometry. The part should be checked for wear whenever the timing chain is inspected or replaced.

Frequently Asked Questions
The crankshaft sprocket transmits crankshaft rotation to the timing chain and therefore drives the camshaft sprockets to maintain valve timing. Common failure modes include worn or damaged teeth and an out-of-round hub, which can allow chain slack, create noise at the timing cover and alter camshaft timing; when wear is present the sprocket is normally replaced with the chain and tensioning components.

If you are unsure of compatibility with your vehicle, you can also confirm by checking against your V.I.N. Simply reach out to us with your V.I.N and desired part number via our Contact page or use our Finding Part Numbers page.
Inspect the crankshaft sprocket whenever the timing chain is inspected or replaced; if there is visible wear, damaged teeth or an out-of-round condition it should be replaced. Replacement is normally carried out together with the timing chain and tensioning components to restore correct timing geometry.
