LR027528 is a driving gear and pinion assembly. Fitted as the driving-side crownwheel and pinion in Defender rear axles, it transmits rotation from the propeller shaft to the axle shafts by the pinion meshing with the crownwheel, changing the axis of rotation and establishing the final drive ratio. Correct gear mesh and bearing preload control noise, vibration and load distribution across the gear teeth during acceleration and steady cruising; wear or pitting of the gears, or incorrect setup, can produce abnormal noise and reduce transmission of drive under load.
