LR049494 is a tailgate latch. Fitted to the tailgate as part of the luggage compartment/tailgate lock controls, this latch accepts the striker when the tailgate is closed, captures it with an internal catch and retains the tailgate under road and aerodynamic loads. When a release input is applied - via the internal release lever, exterior handle or remote release system - the latch withdraws the catch to free the striker and permit the tailgate to open. The unit mounts to the tailgate and links to the lock release mechanism and any associated release cable or actuator; service or replacement restores correct engagement and release of the tailgate.
