Land Rover Part Number: RTC4398 - Steering Box Sector Shaft
RTC4398 is a steering box sector shaft fitted in the steering box sector. The machined shaft converts rotary input from the steering column into the lateral movement of the sector gear and engages that gear to transfer force to the drag link or pitman arm on right hand drive Defender applications. Wear to the shaft or its mating surfaces (including the shaft diameter, keyways and the sector engagement face) can produce play in the steering or uneven steering effort; replacement restores the correct engagement geometry between the column input and the sector gear to maintain predictable steering response.

Frequently Asked Questions
The RTC4398 sector shaft sits inside the steering box and converts rotation from the steering column into the lateral motion of the sector gear, allowing the pitman arm or drag link to move the wheels on right hand drive Defender models. It is a machined engagement shaft; wear or damage to the shaft, keyways or engagement face can cause excessive steering play or uneven effort. Inspect these surfaces during diagnosis and replace the shaft to restore correct engagement geometry and predictable steering response.
