TAG000230 is an Intermediate Reduction Drive Unit fitted to the transfer box on Freelander 1 models. The unit forms the central reduction stage inside the transfer box, positioned between the gearbox output and the vehicle's drive outputs to reduce rotational speed and distribute torque. It carries internal reduction gears and bearings that are subject to high loads; the IRD commonly fails where the central viscous coupling has failed, as a failing viscous unit places extra stress on the IRD and accelerates wear or seizure.
Please note: This IRD unit fits all Freelander 1 models except the 2.5 KV6.
