TUD101720 is an R380 5-speed mainshaft for the R380 manual gearbox. Fitted to Defender (to 2006) and Discovery 1, the mainshaft transmits engine torque through the gearbox and carries the output gears, synchroniser assemblies and bearings that select and support the drive ratios. It meshes with the layshaft and supports axial and radial loads via its bearing journals; replacement is required for excessive gear wear, damaged splines or bearing failure, and correct alignment and bearing preload are important when refitting to ensure gearbox life and minimise noise.
