TUO100100 is a layshaft for the R380 5-speed gearbox. Fitted inside the gearbox casing, this intermediate shaft carries the gearbox counter gears and meshes with the mainshaft gears to produce the transmission's selected ratios. The shaft supports the gear sets on bearings and positions them for engagement by the selector forks and synchronisers; correct gear spacing and smooth changes depend on the layshaft remaining straight with undamaged splines and secure bearing locations. Wear or damage to the layshaft splines or journals can cause gearbox noise, poor engagement or gear slipping under load.
